Daniel always held a special place in his heart for Camp Woodstock. From when he was a young camper to the time he became a counselor, he looked forward to the fun filled days of summer. Camp was his home away from home. It was like a second family to him. Because of his great love for Camp Woodstock and its kids, donations in his memory were directed to the camp. As a result of numerous contributions from friends, family, fellow camp-goers and several communities, $10,000 was received in Daniel's honor. A meeting was held by the directors of the camp along with Dan's close friends and co-counselors to determine the best way to utilize the funds. It was unanimously decided the funds would be devoted to renovations of Cabin #2, Dan's favorite cabin as a counselor. Cabin #2 was the assigned cabin for 7 to 9 year old campers. A recent visit to the camp on Memorial Day 2004 revealed the renovations were near completion. A cabin, which was once a single room housing 10 kids and 2 counselors, has been transformed into a more comfortable 2-room cabin of choice with a rear porch overlooking Black Pond. This is indeed a great tribute to Dan. He would be so proud of its new amenities. In a celebration ceremony this fall, a plaque dedicating the cabin renovations and its renaming in Dan's honor will be affixed to its exterior and will read as follows:
In addition to the renovations and renaming of the "Palmer Cabin," made possible by the donations of many people, we have funded and created a memorial site in honor of Dan along Wiley's Way, a frequently traveled pathway leading from the cabins to the dining hall. On Memorial Day 2003, family members joined us in celebration of Dan's life by helping us create a peaceful setting in which one could cherish the memories they had with Dan and to speak to him in his most desired setting…beneath the tall pines. For those who did not have the chance to meet him, it is a place for them to nurture the idea of having done so. It was our gift to Dan and a way for him to be remembered forever.
Born a Woodstocker….Forever a Woodstocker The memorial dedication was attended by co-counselors, directors of the Camp and family members, some of whom shared their memories of Dan with everyone present. It was a joyful, yet tearful and emotional event. As a final gesture, wind chimes were suspended from beneath the tall pines, allowing them to echo in the distant breeze, emanating a sweet song in remembrance of Dan's being. Year after year we will continue to nourish and nurture Dan's memorial site at Camp Woodstock on Memorial Day…for as long as we are able to do so. This is our gift to Dan. |
