Day One
DID YOU KNOW?
*Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers?
*Young people age 15-20 make up 6.7 percent of the total driving population in this country but are involved in 14 percent of all fatal crashes?
*Sixty-five percent of teen passenger deaths occur when another teenager is driving?
*Nearly half of the fatal crashes involving 16-year-old drivers were single vehicle crashes?
*Graduated drivers license programs appear to be making a difference? Fatal crashes involving 15- to 20-year olds in 2005 were down 6.5 percent from 7,979 in 1995, to the lowest level in ten years.
IF YOU ARE A PARENT OF A TEEN, CELEBRATE THE FIRST DAY OF SAFE TEEN DRIVING AWARENESS WEEK IN CONNECTICUT BY HAVING "THE TALK." You've had the drug talk and the sex talk, it's time for the teen driving/riding talk.

Day Two
DID YOU KNOW?
*How violent motor vehicle crashes are?
*That many motor vehicle deaths are caused by blunt force trauma?
*That when a vehicle hits another object there are three impacts?
1) The first impact involves the vehicle and whatever it hits, bringing the vehicle to a stop. But the bodies of the driver and passengers continue to travel at the same rate of speed the car was travelling before it came to a stop.
2) The second impact is the body slamming into whatever stops it. Hopefully it is a seat belt and an airbag. But it might be the dash board, the windshield, the steering wheel, another person in the vehicle. Those in the front seat are fortunate if the people in the rear are buckled. Otherwise the rear passengers act as catapults causing the second impact to have all that much more force.
3)The third impact involves internal vital organs, which are still travelling at that same rate of speed. The heart, lungs, liver and spleen slam into the sternum and rib cage. The brain crashes into the skull, first in front and then back. Connecting blood vessels are stretched or detached.
CELEBRATE THE SECOND DAY OF SAFE TEEN DRIVING AWARENESS WEEK BY PLEDGING TO BECOME MORE INFORMED OF THE RISKS OF TEEN DRIVING/RIDING.

Day Three
DID YOU KNOW?
That many states have adopted graduated licensing laws to introduce newly licensed drivers to the driving experience in a gradual and controlled manner?
CELEBRATE THE THIRD DAY OF SAFE TEEN DRIVING AWARENESS WEEK BY FAMILIARIZING YOURSELF WITH YOUR STATE'S GR...ADUATED LICENSING LAWS.
|
|
Day Four
DID YOU KNOW?
That the region of the brain that inhibits risky behavior is not fully formed until age 25?

|
|
Day Five
DID YOU KNOW?
That four out of five teens said their parents are the greatest influence to get them to drive more safely? A Parent-Teen Driving Contract can help define expectations, summarize a teen's driving responsibilities, and set forth consequences for when those res...ponsibilities are not met.
CELEBRATE THE FIFTH DAY OF SAFE TEEN DRIVING AWARENESS WEEK BY ENTERING INTO A PARENT-TEEN DRIVING CONTRACT WITH YOUR PARENT OR YOUNG DRIVER.
|
|
Day Six
DID YOU KNOW?
That every state has different laws governing teen driving?
There is an effort to adopt federal legislation, referred to as the STANDUP Act, that will serve to set minimum standards for teen driving laws in each state.
CELEBRATE THE SIXTH DAY OF SAFE TEEN DRI...VING AWARENESS WEEK BY LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE STANDUP ACT AND URGING YOUR LEGISLATORS TO SUPPORT IT.
